One hour

I have a friend who is 21 years old, is quite bright, and wants to become a doctor. He got into a medical college last year.

We meet about once a month -- whenever he comes home from the hostel. He always tells me how he has been partying like there is no tomorrow. His social media accounts are full of pictures of clubs and cafes.

When I ask if he studies or not, he always says he hasn't studied much yet, but he will.

For the entire past year, I kept asking him to study for an hour daily (apart from attending classes). Just an hour. How hard could that be?

He barely passed his first year. It's been a few months since he entered his second year. I've been telling him again to study. His parents will pay around 1.25-1.5 crores ($125–150k) for his degree. I keep reminding him how much his hard-earned money parents are paying. But he just doesn't listen.

This has really started getting on my nerves. YOU SON OF A GUN, WHY CAN'T YOU STUDY FOR JUST AN HOUR? IS THIS HOW YOU WILL BECOME A DOCTOR?

I turned 30 recently. I thought it was a nice milestone to have some real talk with myself. So, I journaled about what I have done, what I am doing, and what I want to do. And during that real talk, I realised that even though I say I want to become a writer, I don't practice writing daily. Let alone an hour, I don't even do 15 minutes of daily writing that's for myself and not for some company.

In case you missed the last sentence, I repeat: even though I say I want to become a writer, I don't practice writing daily. Let alone an hour, I don't even do 15 minutes of daily writing.

How embarrassing, foolish, and hypocritical of me.
